DanteLabs review

Update: I got my results. For the second part of the review, please click here

This Spring, European personal genetics company Dante Labs launched new direct-to-consumer certified DNA tests. The Dante Labs tests are based on Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), which is superior to the micro-array technology used by some American direct to consumer ventures, and are also affordable.

For EUR 550, Dante Labs will sequence your whole exome at 100X coverage. Other tests (like Cystic Fibrosis or Breast Cancer) provide insights about variations in your genes that are associated to specific diseases. At DNAMelody, we are passionate about innovations in genetics and in services that make genetic knowledge accessible to everyone. Moreover, I have always been interested in having my genes sequenced. I decided to try Dante Labs and purchased an Whole Exome Sequencing. Below is the review of the entire experience. Buying the test was simple and completely online. I paid with my credit card like I do on Amazon. After 3 days, I received a box at home with a test kit and instructions inside.

The kit has a tube for me to spit and a special sealed bag to enclose the tube after spitting. The tube has a special reagent to stabilize the DNA after it is sealed.

20170417_192938Spitting (saliva collection) is one of the most non-invasive ways to collect DNA. Dante Labs also emailed me a pre-paid shipping label to send the saliva sample back to them. Before shipping back the sample, I had to register my tube online. Each tube has a unique barcode and Dante Labs asked me to register my tube on their website. I had a question about the kit and Mary from the Dante Labs customer care team replied to me right away. My question was about the label “exempt human specimen” on the box and on the special sealed bag. Mary explained to me that it is used to let couriers know that my package does not contain anything infectious. I am now waiting for my results to arrive via email. Going back to Dante Labs: the company is very professional both on their scientific approach to DNA tests (ex. they use NGS) and on the relationship with customers (nice and rapid customer service). I am also excited about their initiative to offer affordable NGS-based DNA tests to people in Europe. On the negative side, I encourage them to offer more tests in the future, especially a Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS).

Anyway, I will have more insights and update this post once my results arrive. Stay tuned!
